Tau Beta Sigma History

The idea for establishing a National Band Sorority began back in 1937 at Texas Tech University. Wava Banes Turner Henry, and the Texas women under their director D.O. Wiley soon established a local organization known as "Tau Beta Sigma", which was modeled after Kappa Kappa Psi (Honorary band Fraternity) in serving the band and its members, especially the women in the band. In June of 1941 the Texas Women petitioned the grand counsel of Kappa Kappa Psi to officially become affiliated with the Fraternity. But for them to allow the women to join a total revision of Kappa's constitution would have to have been made, so they we're given the idea to set out to start an honorary Sorority of their own. In 1945 A. Frank Martin, National Executive of Kappa Kappa Psi was brought out to help the women in their goals to become an affiliated sorority after Texas was faced with some difficulties. They worked out a plan that if the Texas Tech women allowed a local organization at Oklahoma State to apply for the charter they would face less difficulties. So in January of 1946 the Texas Tech women gave over their name, constitution, jewelry and ritual to Oklahoma State. On March 26th 1946 the charter was granted and the Alpha Chapter at Oklahoma State was established. On May 4th 1946 the women of Oklahoma arrived in Texas to install the Texas Tech women as the Beta Chapter.

Delta Omega History

The Delta Omega Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma was officially established on May 16, 1971, at Bloomsburg State College. The fourteen initiates were installed by the Gamma Chi Chapter of Mansfield State College and by Mrs. Natalie Hartzell, District IX Counselor (now known as the Northeast District). Formal plans to become affiliated with the national sorority began in February 1970, but was delayed until May because of the difficulties getting organized. Officers of the colony were Pat Lieby, President; Maggie Knoebel, Vice President; Deanna Shuman, Treasurer; and Mr. Steven Wallace, Advisor.
