February 22nd, 2009 - The Bloomsburg University Ice Hockey team won their first MICHL championship with a 6-2 victory over Penn State Berks Sunday night. The win capped an emotional weekend for the Huskies who defeated both rivals, Susquehanna and PSU Berks, in a couse of three days.
Bloomsburg jumped out early to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period and never looked back. Berks, stunned by the play of their opponents, lost their poised early in the game and never regained it. Bloomsburg took advantage of their numerous powerplays, and led 5-1 going into the third period.
Penn State came out in the third period looking for a sign of life and brought the game back to within three. Led by Goaltender Matt Markert, the Huskies shut down the short lived burst by the Berks offense. Shortly after, the inspired play of the Huskies came through again, taking a 6-2 lead and clinching the championship.
