Biographical Sketch of Donny Beaver
Donny Beaver has been an entrepreneur since his teenage years. In high school he operated a professional fly-tying business and lawn-mowing service in Central Pennsylvania. While in college in the early 1970s he expanded his service business to include painting, janitorial and landscaping. By the time he graduated from college in 1974, Donny employed more100 people in Beaver’s Professional Services, Inc.
Throughout the remainder of the 1970s and early 1980s, he was a leading distributor for ServiceMaster residential, commercial and industrial cleaning (www.ServiceMaster.com) He further expanded his enterprise to include heavy-duty industrial and hazardous materials cleanup in North America and Japan by purchasing the Sermac division from the ServiceMaster in 1982.
In 1984 Donny invented and patented the Pig brand absorbent sock and with his business partner, Ben Stapelfeld, launched New Pig Corporation, a manufacturing and distribution company to sell the product (www.NewPig.com). New Pig has grown to become the world’s leading manufacturing and distribution company for products that prevent and clean up heavy-duty leaks and spills. Today, New Pig employs more than 500 people worldwide.
In 1996, Donny turned over his day-to-day responsibilities at New Pig to pursue his life-long passion for flyfishing (Donny remains a principal shareholder and serves on the Board of New Pig). Over the past 15 years he has developed a unique business model for conserving more than 50 miles of irreplaceable trout-stream properties through operating HomeWaters Retreats (www.HomeWatersRetreats.com). HomeWaters employs over 100 people at their operations in Pennsylvania and Colorado.
Recently Donny joined the fight for energy independence and family-sustaining career creation in America by becoming active in the Marcellus Shale Coalition - www.MarcellusCoalition.org. He serves on the Marcellus Shale Coalition Public Relations, Membership and Workforce Development Committees.
An active public speaker, Donny often presents to business and marketing associations, conservation groups and faith-based organizations. Donny has received numerous business awards including induction into the Blair County Business Hall of Fame, Southern Alleghenies Entrepreneur of the Year, Pennsylvania Environmental Entrepreneur of the Year, Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur of the Year and the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, presented by President Ronald Reagan.
Since 1974, Donny has been married to his childhood sweetheart, Pam. They have two sons, Joshua with his wife Annie and grandsons, Julien & Brennan, and Troy who recently received his JD and MBA. Josh and Troy are in charge of various areas of business development for HomeWaters in the Shale Gas Industry. Donny received his B.S. in Biology from Wheaton College (IL) in 1974. For the past 35 years, he has served as an elder, adult education and care group leader as well as choir and vocal ensemble teams at Hillside Community Church. Donny also serves on numerous business and charitable boards of directors.
