Institute History

The Institute for Culture and Society, an institute within the College of Liberal Arts at Bloomsburg University was created in the spring of 2001 as a vehicle to promote scholarly research, creative activity, and educational excellence in the liberal arts.  Hsien-Tung Liu, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, originally conceived the idea of the Institute.  He worked collaboratively with the chairpersons of the departments of the College, to bring forward a proposal to establish and fund the Institute.  Start-up funding for the Institute was contributed by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, by the fourteen departments that make up the College, and by the Special Initiatives Fund of the College.

The inaugural meeting of the Institute was held on Friday, September 2002.  The original Board of Directors included Dale Bertelsen, James Douthit, Steven Hales, Michael Hickey, William Hudon, Wendy Lynne Lee, Hsein-Tung Liu, Marion Mason, Swapan Mookerjee, Andrea Peason, Jesus Salas-Elorza, Yevette Samson, Vera Viditz-Ward, A. G. Wemple, Dee Anne Wymer.  William V. Hudon served as the first Executive Director.
